Trivium Tutor is an AI-powered educational application for children. We take privacy seriously, especially when it comes to protecting children's data. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it.

Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

Trivium Tutor serves children ages 8 and older. We comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA):

Parental consent model: Only parents create accounts. Children access the app through parent-managed student profiles.
Minimal data collection: We only collect a child's first name or nickname for personalization. No last name, birth date, photo, or other identifying information.
No personal questions: Our AI tutor is explicitly designed to never ask children about their personal life, feelings, or experiences. All conversations focus on curriculum content.
No advertising or tracking: We do not show ads or use third-party advertising trackers.
Parental access: Parents can view their child's lesson progress and conversation history at any time.
Deletion rights: Parents can delete student profiles and all associated data at any time.

What We Collect

Account Information (Parents)

Email address (for login and account recovery)
Password (encrypted, never stored in plain text)

Student Profiles

Display name (first name or nickname only)
That's it. No age, grade, birth date, or other personal information.

Learning Data

Lesson progress (which lessons started/completed)
Conversation history (questions asked by AI and student responses)
Reading preferences (text size, font weight, highlights, bookmarks)

Usage Data

Lesson credits used (for free tier limits)
Basic analytics (page views, browser type, country) via Vercel Analytics

How We Use Your Data

To provide the service: Saving progress, generating tutor responses, tracking lesson completion.
To personalize learning: The AI uses conversation history within a lesson to provide contextual follow-up questions.
To improve the product: Aggregate, anonymized usage patterns help us improve lesson content and the tutoring experience.

We do not sell your data. We do not use it for advertising.

Third-Party Services

We use the following services to operate Trivium Tutor:

Supabase (Database & Authentication)

Stores account data, student profiles, and lesson progress. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit.

xAI (Grok AI)

Powers the AI tutor. Receives lesson text and student responses to generate questions. Does not receive email addresses, student names, or any personally identifiable information.

Vercel (Hosting & Analytics)

Hosts the application and provides privacy-friendly analytics (page views, performance metrics). No personal data tracking.

Meta Pixel (Marketing Analytics)

We use the Meta Pixel to measure the effectiveness of our advertising and to show relevant ads to people who have visited our website. The pixel tracks page views and certain actions (like signing up) but does not have access to conversation content, lesson progress, or any data about children. You can opt out of Meta's advertising tracking via your Facebook Ad Settings or by using browser extensions that block tracking pixels.

Data Security

All data is transmitted over HTTPS (encrypted in transit)
Passwords are hashed using industry-standard algorithms
Database access is restricted and encrypted at rest
We use Row Level Security to ensure users can only access their own data

Data Retention

Account data: Retained until you delete your account
Student profiles: Retained until you delete the student profile
Lesson progress: Retained until you clear it (via "Restart Lesson") or delete the student profile
Analytics: Aggregated and anonymized, retained for up to 12 months

Your Rights

You have the right to:

Access: View all data associated with your account and student profiles
Correct: Update your email or student display names at any time
Delete: Remove student profiles (deletes all their progress) or request full account deletion
Export: Request a copy of your data by contacting us

Cookies & Local Storage

We use the following cookies and browser storage:

Authentication cookies: Required to keep you logged in (session management)
Theme preference: Stored locally to remember light/dark mode
Reading preferences: Text size and font weight stored locally
Meta Pixel cookies: Used to measure advertising effectiveness and show relevant ads to website visitors. See "Third-Party Services" above for details and opt-out options.
